A man lies with heavy burns in a mental hospital and communicates only over his two hand dolls - Balder and Bodil - with the outside world.

Too shy to address the lady of his heart directly the doll player Sigurd was content with falling in love on distance and collecting everything he could get to know about his idealized loving. He drapes the devotional objects, newspaper cuttings and devised stories on a table on which at the end proverbially the whole life of the loving is met.

When he struggles through it to reveal himself to his love it comes to the disaster.
